Homemade Whipped Cream for a Valentine’s Day Treat

This super-easy treat to make for the kids for Valentine’s Day can be made in just minutes but feels really festive. This flavored whipped cream is pink and oh so tasty!

This Cherry Whipped Cream recipe is flavored with Fun Dip candy and can be used to top chocolate milk, hot chocolate, an ice cream shake, waffles, pancakes and even served with fresh berries.

There are many ways to make flavored whipped cream, but this way is unique and just right for a Valentine’s day dessert idea.

I like to think that my kids don’t eat a lot of junk food. But I would be kidding myself. I really am trying to work on that this year. (I wrote that in 2014 and I’m still working on it! Insert facepalm emoji here…).

But there are a few days out of the year when an extra special treat just makes sense. And Valentine’s Day is one of those days.

If you’ve seen my Beer Brownies post, which are topped with beer whipped cream, you can probably tell that I’m pretty obsessed with all the things you can do with a simple whipped cream recipe.

Fun Dip Candy wasn’t used in my first attempt. I originally tried cherry Jello, and since I am a novice in the kitchen, I had no idea that the gelatin would make the heavy cream get crunk.

That is really just the best way to describe it. I mean it started out fine, and then BAM! Crunk.

But if you are looking for a non-candy treat for your kids this holiday you could always make them a cute little DIY Heart Pillow.

What is Fun Dip?

If you’re wondering what to do with Fun Dip powder you should first know what it is.

Fun Dip candy is delicious and a childhood favorite of mine. I remember getting these at the baseball park when we would watch my neighbor play Little League.

But you can also make your own Fun Dip at home.

Fun Dip Valentine’s are a super popular thing among my kid’s age group. So I know that around that holiday, I will have a bunch of Fun Dip hanging around the house.

This also happens around Halloween. So this Fun Dip Whipped Cream is a great thing to do with leftover Halloween candy as well.

To make homemade whipped cream, you’ll start with heavy whipping cream.

If you think this needs to be sweeter, just add in more powdered sugar. It’s a personal preference.

You’ll need about 4 ounces (about 8 TBSP) of Cherry Fun Dip powder. The packets are .43 ounces so you’ll need about 9 packets. You do not need to be exact.

You can also use a different flavor. Fun Dip comes in a few varieties but I prefer the cherry. It’s pink and I think the cherry flavor pairs really well with all kinds of things.

You can find multi-packs of Fun Dip at Target and just about any other major store or on Amazon. I didn’t think I would have trouble finding Fun Dip, but you usually can’t just buy one or two bags of it.

How to Make Cherry Fun Dip Whipped Cream

Homemade whipped cream is easy to make from scratch. You just sweeten the heavy whipping cream and beat air into it, making it fluffy and creamy!

Step 1

To the bowl of a stand mixer, add cold heavy whipping cream, powdered sugar, and Cherry Fun Dip powder.

If possible, pre-chill the bowl and the metal whisk. When making whipped cream from scratch the colder the cream the better the end result.

Step 2

Beat the flavored whipped cream until soft peaks form. It should take about 3 minutes.

The image above is not showing that. Check out this post on Fine Cooking for great photos showing soft peaks.

You could also use a hand-mixer. But I so rarely get out my stand mixer that sometimes I crave using it.

I feel super accomplished in my cooking skills when I use it. Even though making homemade whipped cream requires no skill.

Try not to overbeat it. Mine is a little closer to stiff peaks. But it still works. the kids most likely won’t judge you on your peaks.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you make homemade whipped cream without a mixer?

You can vigorously whisk heavy whipping cream with a whisk. To save your arm, you can also add it to a mason jar and shake it for a few minutes. If you have kids, this might be a fun way to get them involved in the process.

How do you store whipped cream?

I like to try to make this right before I need it if at all possible. But it can be made a bit ahead of time.

Whether you’re storing leftovers or pre-made, keep them in an air-tight container in the refrigerator. It should remain fresh for about 10 hours.

What are soft peaks when whipping cream?

Soft peaks are when the mixing paddle or whisk is dipped into the whipped cream mixer and when you turn the paddle with the tip pointing towards the sky, the whipped cream slowly folds back onto itself.
