How to Make Aperol Gin and Tonic

A bottle of gin next to a glass on a table with a small amount in a clear jigger.

To a tall glass with ice, add the gin.

A bottle of Aperol on a table next to a glass of ice and a jigger measuring Aperol.

Next, add the Aperol.

A can of tonic on a table next to a glass holding Aperol and gin.

Top with Tonic Water to taste.

Give a quick stir to combine the flavors and enjoy. I like to use a bar spoon because it’s tall and super skinny and maneuvers around the ice well, but you can use whatever you have on hand.

Variations

  • Mix it with soda – Don’t like tonic? Use club soda instead! It will be super refreshing and let the flavors of the gin and Aperol really shine.
  • Make it a mocktail – Want to make this without alcohol?? Use an alcohol-free gin (like this one from Ritual) and a mix of fresh orange juice and grapefruit juice in place of the Aperol. See my Alcoholic Gin and Tonic recipe for reference.
  • Spicy – add some heat with some muddle jalapeno.
  • Herbs – Muddle herbs to add another layer of flavor
  • Fruit – Fresh berries or other citrus will give even more complexity to this drink

Top tip

Make this cocktail then give it a taste test. Add or take away ingredients per your taste preferences. Want more sweetness? Add a little extra tonic. Want less booze, use less gin! Make this fit your flavor profile.

Frequently Asked Questions

What can Aperol be mixed with?

Aperol can be mixed with a variety of mixers and other liquors. It has a bitter orange flavor so it pairs well with citrus, other fruits and herbal notes.

Can you drink Aperol on its own?

Yes, you can drink Aperol on its own, however, you may not love the bitter flavor. At the very least, I suggest you add some club soda to add some fizziness and help dilute the strong flavor a smidge.
