A classic Moscow Mule is delish but I also love a good variation on a Moscow Mule. But I think this one is something extra special.

This Cherry Mule would be great fall and holiday parties, for a special Valentine’s Day drink, or any time! The cherry juice makes this vodka recipe fruity but not over-the-top summery.

All you need to make a Sour Cherry Moscow Mule!

To make the perfect Cherry Moscow Mule you will need:

I love the hint of spiciness and heat the fresh ginger adds to this Cherry Moscow Mule recipe layered alongside the ginger beer, but if you don’t have any to hand feel free to leave it out.

Obviously, I use cherry juice here because I’m super lazy, but if you happen to have a cherry tree and therefore more fresh cherries than you know what to do with (I wish I had that problem) you can always make your own.

I also want to point out that cherry juice is not the same as grenadine. That is all artificial and WAY sweeter. It works in my Cherry Vodka Sour but not here.

Maple juice makes it sweet and gives it a rich flavor that makes this a great drink to head into colder months. But if you don’t love maple syrup in your cocktails you can use a different type of sweetener like simple syrup.

Also, in a pinch you could use Rose’s Lime, but it will taste fresher and more fruity made with fresh lime juice.

Variations

  • Change the spirit – Obviously, vodka is the classic spirit in a Moscow Mule, but you’d also get a delicious drink with a bit more complexity by switching to gin. Also, I think pineapple vodka would be tasty here too!
  • Use pomegranate juice – this Moscow Mule recipe is also super yummy and still very pretty made using pomegranate juice, if you find that easier to get hold of! If you’re looking to make this around the holidays, pomegranate juice would actually be my first choice.
  • Add almond – Almond and cherry play really well together so a splash of Amaretto or Orgeat would be super yummy. Even a little almond extract would work.

Top tips

  • You can make this cocktail in a cocktail shaker if you’d prefer, but be sure not to add the ginger beer unless you want the shaker to explode. Not a good idea! Wait to top off the cherry cocktail until it’s in the glass over ice.
  • To make ahead, mix the drink ahead of time (up to adding ice and ginger beer) in another vessel and keep until ready. Then pour over ice and top with chilled ginger beer just before serving.
  • Use a copper mug, to make this sipping experience even better. They are designed to make the drink stay colder and is so refreshing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use simple syrup instead of the maple syrup?

I love the flavor the natural sweetener has, but if you don’t have any go right ahead – this is how you make your own simple syrup. You can also use agave or honey.

Can I use ginger ale instead?

Ginger ale is a lot sweeter than ginger beer so yes, but don’t add the maple syrup until you’ve tasted the drink with the ginger ale. Stir it in to taste to make sure your drink is not too sweet!
