Why I Love this Egg Cream Recipe

This Chocolate Peppermint Egg Cream is a favorite holiday tradition and drink recipe for my family. It’s non-alcoholic and so easy to make.

This old-fashioned drink with chocolate syrup and seltzer (you can use club soda) was made famous in the 1920’s in New York delis but is something your kids will enjoy today. If they like chocolate milk, they’ll love this egg cream drink (which, again, doesn’t have any eggs!)

I used whole milk, which makes it nice and creamy, but if you drink skim, use that instead.

These can also be made with half and half or cream for a really rich flavor.

If you don’t have club soda you can use sparkling water or seltzer. They are all very similar. Club soda has some minerals added so it’s a little more flavorful.

But I use club soda in everything and don’t think it has that big of a taste difference.

It’s an odd combination of ingredients that totally works! You could even serve these in place of hot cocoa and make a toppings charcuterie board to make these similar to those freak shakes.

Tips and Variations

I know that some kids think peppermint is too spicy so you can absolutely leave it out and make this a simple chocolate egg cream soda.

You can also modify the amount to make it more or less minty based on what you and your family like.

You can also swap the peppermint extract for a little bit of vanilla extract.

You can also turn this into a cocktail by adding a little bit of vodka or even a flavored vodka, like vanilla.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an egg cream?

An egg cream is a popular drink that was served in old-timey soda fountains made with flavored syrup, milk and soda water. The recipe does not contain any eggs. They are creamy and sweet but much more refreshing than a milkshake.

Why is an egg cream called an egg cream?

I did a little bit of research and this may have something to do with a yiddish term being misused or coopted to mean something else. I’m sure you’ve heard the name mentioned on a food show and recoiled at the idea of a drink with eggs in it. But there is no need to worry. No eggs are used.

Is this the same as an Italian Soda?

Not quite. Italian Sodas typically have heavy cream or ice cream as an ingredient. You can turn this classic egg cream recipe into an Italian soda by adding a scoop or two of vanilla ice cream or swapping out the milk in favor of heavy cream.
