This Crock Pot Apple and Cherry Dump Cake is sweet and has that signature butter-y cake batter topping.
The way it all works together is a dream come true for this sweet-loving gal.
I mean, I’m lazy and I love easy cake mix desserts. Could there be anything better than a dump cake for me?
Ingredients
All of these ingredients can be kept in the pantry making this a great last-minute dessert to throw together! (And by last minute I mean you don’t have to go to the store. But it will still take 2 hours to cook in the Crock-Pot).
You need a can of Apple Pie Filling, a can of Cherry Pie Filling, cinnamon, chopped pecans, a box of yellow Cake Mix and butter.
I wouldn’t say that Cherry Pie is my favorite dessert. That would be like choosing your favorite child.
But I do crave it several times a year. But finding a good cherry pie can be hard. This dessert helps me curb that craving.
But cherry pie filling can be used in a bunch of different types of desserts so I can get my fix with this yummy dump cake recipe.
And when you mix it with apples, the flavor is sweet and wonderful.
Just be sure to double-check the label for the apple pie filling. Sometimes they add in spices and if that is the case, you won’t want to add any more cinnamon.
Also, don’t be afraid to add a sprinkle of sea salt over the top. You know that sweet and salty thing is ridiculously good. I use salted butter too.
The only equipment you need for this is a crock pot. I use the one in the photo all the time but here is an updated version of it.

There is no wrong way to serve a dump cake.
Serve the apple cherry dump cake warm, straight out of the slow cooker or let cool to room temperature.
I typically like my dump cakes on their own but they are also delicious with a little bit of whipped cream, vanilla ice cream or Cool Whip.
For a party
If you are having a party, you can keep the crockpot on the counter and pair it with a serving spoon so your guests can serve themselves.
Better yet, have a dump cake party and serve a punch of different types of dump cake recipes.
Frequently Asked Questions
I’ve made a lot of different kinds of dump cakes. And there are a few reasons why using pie filling in a dump cake makes a lot of sense. In fact, it is my preferred way of making them. Pie filling is just plain easy. There is no cutting or washing required like when you use fresh fruit.
Us lazy people love to make dump cake because all it requires is opening and dumping. Pie filling is also sweeter than fresh fruit and has more liquid. You can sweeten fresh fruit up with sugar, but you just aren’t going to get the moisture that you get from pie filling.
You can absolutely make dump cake with a mixture of canned filling and fresh fruit if you want to take the time to clean and dice the fruit. But I really don’t think it will change the flavor all that much. You may get a little bit of extra texture, though.
To store leftovers of this apple cherry dump cake, scoop the cooled cake into a container with an air-tight lid. Keep it in the refrigerator for a few days.
Top Tips
- To get more of that crunchy crust texture on top simply lay down a few paper towels across the top of the bowl before adding the lid. It will catch any condensation that may make it soggy!
- You can leave out the nuts or change up the type to suit your taste preferences.
- Don’t have a slow cooker? You can make this the old-fashioned way in the oven too. Just layer everything in a baking dish and bake for an hour.
The Name Dump Cake is Horrific
I recently had a video chat with a mentor of mine who is based in the UK. And when we were talking about my love of dump cake recipes, she looked absolutely horrified.
She was like do you know what “dump” means in the UK?
And I was like, yup, means the same thing here… And yet still, dump cakes are bae. As a boy mom, I’m used to a little potty talk.
And the fact that these types of desserts are SO easy to make – open and dump – makes me move past the name.
