Why You’ll Love This Chipped Beef Dip Recipe

This Armour dried beef dip recipe is actually an old-school party appetizer that was made popular when fresh meat was at a shortage. People had to use preserved meat products, such as dried beef, and this delicious dip was one of the dishes that were born.

I’m a big fan of nostalgic and classic recipes as they usually use basic ingredients to create delicious simple recipes. Two of my favorite recipes (listed below) of all time include dried beef which lead me to search for even more delicious things to make with it.

The dried beef is getting a little harder to find (Walmart is my go-to for it), but it’s worth tracking down! There are a few brands who make it but Armour is the easiest brand to find at the moment.

This dried chipped beef cream cheese dip recipe makes a creamy dip with a unique (deliciously salty) flavor that people really enjoy. It’s so easy to prepare and done in a matter of minutes.

You can serve this classic appetizer with fresh vegetables like sliced green peppers and carrots or with crusty bread, Ritz crackers, corn chips, or tortilla chips.

What you need to make this recipe for dried beef cream cheese dip.

Full-fat cream cheese or reduced fat, you can use either. (Same goes with sour cream.) I make it with full-fat so that’s what I think tastes best but you can make that decision.

Dried beef is thin slices of salty preserved beef. You’ll find it in the canned meat section of the grocery store. Armour is a popular brand in the United States which is why you’ll also often hear people call this tasty dip by the name “Armour beef dip.”

I personally prefer it, but you can use any brand. Some people use Buddig beef but it is my least favorite option.

Soy sauce makes it taste richer by adding umami, but some use Worcestershire sauce. You can use that instead.

The green onions add some freshness. It also cuts the creamy taste of cream cheese so that it’s not too overwhelming.

How to Make Beef Dip with Chipped Beef

Small pieces of dried beef, a block of softened cream cheese, green onions, and soy sauce altogether in a large bowl.

Step 1

Rinse the dried beef slices and pat them to dry. (This helps to remove excess saltiness). Then chop the dried beef into small pieces.

Step 2

Place the block of room-temperature cream cheese, sour cream, dried beef, soy sauce, and green onions in a large bowl and mix until well combined.

Step 3

Refrigerate the cream cheese mixture an hour or more before serving to let the flavors develop

Serve

Serve this Dried Beef Cream Cheese Dip with a variety of crackers, baguette slices, fresh vegetables or chips like corn and tortilla chips.

Variations

  • Cheesier — Make it the cheesiest by adding other types of cheese like shredded sharp cheddar cheese, smoked gouda, and pepper jack.
  • Spicy — Add some heat to your delicious beef dip by incorporating a little bit of black pepper, chili powder, sriracha, or Tabasco.
  • Other add-ons — You can add garlic powder and onion powder for an additional punch of umami in this savory dip. Herbs like dill weed, dried oregano, and parsley would do for extra flavor, too!

Top tips

  • Be sure to let it sit in the fridge for at least an hour. The flavors will develop and evolve into something tastier if they hang out a bit before serving.
  • Make sure to use softened cream cheese. When the cream cheese is at room temperature it’s so much easier to mix and blend everything together.
  • Serve it on a pie plate or other shallow dish and have a variety of dippers in small bowls that people can choose from. It’ll surely be a crowd-pleaser!
