Fireball whisky is the main ingredient that makes this cocktail work. It’s a whiskey that’s flavored with cinnamon and sugar that tastes, on its own, like hot and spicy cinnamon candy. A little goes a long way!

Next, you’ll need whiskey or bourbon. I prefer bourbon so that is what I use. You don’t need to buy a special bottle but use one that you like the flavor of since this drink is mostly alcohol.

Just a dash of bitters will help bring out all the flavors in this drink. It’s an essential ingredient in an old-fashioned cocktail.

Add a simple citrus peel (more specifically, orange peel) for a garnish.

Use a vegetable peeler and remove a piece of peel from an orange. Fold it in half, lengthwise, and squeeze it over the top of the drink. It will produce a slight mist that includes the oils in the peel.

It gives the drink an amazing aroma and just the slightest taste of orange.

Rub the orange peel on the rim of the glass before you drop it in. It’s another way to add a subtle orange flavor.

Variations

Top tips

You can’t have a Cinnamon Whiskey Old Fashioned without adding a cinnamon stick for a garnish, right?

I like to use large ice cubes for this Fireball drink. They add the perfect chill and won’t melt quickly so you’ll be able to savor all that sweet spiciness of the drink without it becoming diluted.

While I like to use regular bitters, you swap that out for another flavor to try something more unique. Ginger Bitters would be great. Cherry Bitters would also be yummy.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this different from a regular Old Fashioned?

The one difference is the addition of Fireball whiskey. It takes the traditional bitters and whisky or bourbon-based drink and adds a hot and sweet cinnamon flavor to it.

Do I need to add simple syrup?

No. The beauty of this cocktail is that the Fireball whisky is already adequately sweetened. Win-win! It’s one less ingredient you need to worry about.

What’s best to mix with Fireball?

The cool thing about Fireball is that is mixes really well with a lot of different things. From fruit juices, like pineapple or orange, to sodas like Fireball and Dr. Pepper, you can make tons of easy cocktails.
