Tips

  • If you plan to serve these margs pitcher style, keep the ice on the side so people can serve themselves and the margaritas won’t get watered down.
  • If serving at a gathering, rim the glasses ahead of time, to save time. They are fine to sit and wait until ready to use.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best tequila for margaritas?

The best tequila for margaritas is the one you enjoy! I prefer a blanco tequila, but you can also use reposado. I would skip an anejo since those tend to be a little more expensive and have a more complex, concentrated flavor.

You don’t need to spend a lot on a bottle, just make sure you like the taste of it on its own, even if you’re mixing it in a cocktail.

Why do you need triple sec for margaritas?

You don’t need triple sec (quite a few of the recipes here don’t contain it), but it is found in the classic recipe for margaritas. Both tequila and lime are tart, and the orange liqueur adds a touch of sweetness to balance out the flavor and cut through all of that tartness.

You can substitute it for Cointreau if you already have a bottle of that orange liqueur on your bar.
