Mexican Mule Recipe with Jalapeño

This yummy Mexican Mule recipe with Jalapeño is easy to make and delicious to drink! It’s a spicy twist on a yummy tequila cocktail and it’s one of my favorite Moscow Mule recipes to make when the weather turns warm.

Why you’ll love this spicy Tequila Mule

This spicy Mexican Mule with Jalapeño and Fresh Ginger is a great twist on the classic Mule recipe. It uses tequila instead of vodka and this version has a kick!

A plain Moscow Mule is so five minutes ago. Mix up this Mexican Mule with Jalapeno recipe and dazzle your friends. They’ll love it!

Moscow Mules got super trendy and were on every cocktail menu for a while. I totally get it. They’re super tasty and refreshing and really easy to make at home.

This version of the drink has tons of flavor. The triple sec/ tequila combo makes it feel familiar (since those are also found in a margarita), but the addition of the ginger beer makes it unique.

I don’t love spicy foods, but there is something amazing about a cocktail with a little bit of a spicy kick so I came up with this Spicy Mexican Mule Recipe to share with you! 

You can control just how spicy this tequila cocktail gets which I love so you don’t make it so spicy you won’t be able to enjoy it. After all, you know your tastebuds best!

The fresh ginger pairs really well with the ginger beer and it’s just all around IN YOUR FACE. In the best possible way.

With just a little muddling, this drink is ready to sip from a copper mug (a regular glass works too as you can see in my photos!)

So if you’re a tequila fan who is looking for a little bit of heat in their cocktail, give this a try!

Ingredients

A few basic cocktail ingredients plus fresh jalapeño and ginger are all you need for this next-level Cinco de Mayo drink!

To make a Spicy Mexican Mule you’ll need:

Store brand triple sec is fine here, but if you only have Cointreau on your home bar that is fine too.

I used to think that it was ok to skip the bitters but it’s not. It adds a richness to the drink that is wonderful. It’s like Worcestershire Sauce but for cocktails. I spelled that right on the first try… Boom.

Before we get started, I’ve got a quick warning:

DO NOT CUT YOUR JALAPEÑO AND THEN RUB YOUR EYES! Or touch your nose. Having allergies truly sucks and my constantly runny nose really tried to ruin me with some jalapeño hands and a flimsy tissue. Don’t be me. Be smarter.

You also don’t want ginger in your eyes, rather than your drink. Make sure to wash your hands immediately after handling either ingredient and DO NOT touch your face or eyes or other sensitive areas of the skin and body.

Maybe even wear gloves. Don’t say I didn’t warn you. Now that we’ve talked about safety we can start making the drink.

Step 1

Muddle a few slices of jalapeño (without seeds if you are a sissy like me and you’d like less spice in your drink) and a few slices of fresh ginger. Release those fragrant and spicy juices and oils into the glass.

Step 2

Add the fresh lime juice, tequila and Triple Sec (and agave syrup if you would like to add a little more sweetness!)

Step 3

Add ice to the top of the glass.

Step 4

Add the ginger beer and a few dashes of bitters.

Garnish with more jalapeño and a sprig of cilantro because it smells really good as you bring the drink up to your face hole.

Variations

  • This is spicy. But you can make it even spicier if you’re into that kind of personal torture by adding more jalapeño (with the seeds) and even more ginger. 
  • If you don’t have Triple Sec or even Cointreau to substitute, you can leave it out. This drink will still taste amazing!
  • If you don’t have fresh ginger, no worries, the ginger beer will still give the drink plenty of flavor.
  • To make this a regular Tequila Mule, you can leave out the spice altogether or make an even easier version (See my Tequila Mule recipe).
  • You can muddle any kind of fresh fruit in the glass to add another layer of flavor. Grapefruit would be SO good!
  • You can use reposado tequila if you prefer it. I like the flavor of Blanco a little bit better.

Mexican Mule with Jalapeno

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 ounces Tequila
  • 1/2 ounce Triple Sec
  • 1 ounce lime, fresh squeezed
  • 4 ounces Ginger Beer
  • 3 slices jalapeno, seeded
  • 2 slices ginger, peeled
  • 2 dashes dash of bitters
  • Cilantro for garnish optional

Instructions

  • Slice your jalapeno in half, lengthwise.
  • Remove the seeds.
  • Cut jalapeno in to slices.
  • Peel the ginger and cut in to coin sized pieces
  • In a tall glass, add 4 pieces of jalapeno and 2 ginger pieces.
  • Add lime juice and muddle (taking care to not splash any in your eye).
  • Add tequila and Triple Sec and give a quick stir.
  • Add ice.
  • Top with ginger beer.
  • Garnish with jalapeno and a sprig of cilantro.

Notes

*NOTE: Fresh ginger and jalapeno give this Jalapeno Tequila Mule Recipe its spice. But use caution. Everyone knows that jalapeno can burn your face off thanks to its devil seeds. The ginger also adds a nice fire to this drink. Make sure to wash your hands immediately after handling either ingredient and DO NOT touch your face or eyes or other sensitive areas of the skin and body.
