This Tequila Soda is seriously SO easy and one of my favorite ways to sip tequila.

A summer trip to Mexico reignited my love of tequila. Sure you can make a margarita, but I love this Tequila and Soda even more!

Why this recipe works

Whether you like making craft cocktails at home or are looking for simple tequila mixed drinks to quench your thirst, this Tequila Soda recipe is perfect.

It’s foolproof with no need for a cocktail shaker. It takes just a minute to put this drink together which makes it just as perfect for a leisurely happy hour as it is for a busy weeknight beverage.

With quality tequila and fresh lime, this Tequila Soda is perfect for a hot summer day. It’s very similar to my Skinny Margarita recipe and, of course, you can drink tequila on the rocks. But the club soda gives this tequila soda lime extra fizz which feels like a party in your mouth.

Not to be confused with Tequila and Coke (in this case the soda is club soda not cola), this recipe is barely a recipe. It’s no fuss and totally easy to make. But with no added sugar, this tequila and club soda feels like a better choice.

Also try a Tequila Mule, Basil Strawberry Margarita, Fun Dip Flavored Tequila Shot or my Red Wine and Tequila Cocktails (Trust me!).

What you need to make Tequila Soda or sometimes called Ranch Water.

There are several types of tequila that can be used to make a Tequila Soda recipe. I prefer to use Blanco (sometimes also called platinum – but whatever it’s called, it’s a clear liquid without any yellow), but you can use your favorite.

Resposado, anejo or even mezcal, which is smokier, are still delicious with club soda and will vary in flavor.

Casamigos has a slight vanilla note that is super tasty. Since this recipe only has a few ingredients, you want to use a tequila whose flavor you really enjoy. This brand is always great for people who are afraid of tequila (I get it, we all have that night in college that made us shun tequila…) since it’s smooth and balanced.

Citrus always pairs well with tequila. While I prefer lime in my Tequila Soda, you can use anything. Fresh lemon, orange and even grapefruit would be delicious.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. To a short cocktail glass with ice, add the tequila.

Since I like the flavor I use 2 ounces. If you aren’t much of a drinker or don’t want to taste the alcohol as much, start with 1 ounce and add more to taste.

Note: You can use a jigger to measure but I am in love with this little measuring cup. It’s the kind you can read from the top so it makes things super easy! See all my favorite bar tools here.

2. Add the club soda.

I love the way the fizziness makes it super refreshing without adding sweetness.

3. Squeeze in the fresh lime.

I am a big fan of lime juice so I go a little overboard with the fresh lime. Start with a quarter of a lime and taste then add more as needed.

You can also use a citrus squeezer to ensure that you get the most juice out of your limes. And if you’re trying to make a large batch or serving a lot of people, this will speed things up. Just add about 1/2 ounce of fresh lime juice to each drink.

Variations

Flavored sparkling waters on a counter next to a glass.

Sometimes I like to use flavored sparkling water in place of the club soda. It’s a great way to add an extra layer of flavor. They still have the fizz that I love and are a fun way to change things up. Just make sure you’re using something that doesn’t add any sweetness.

The ones in the photo are from Target but you can use any flavored sparkling water you can find.

You can make it spicy by muddling a little bit of fresh serrano pepper like I do in my Serrano Margarita.

You can change up the citrus too! Try this with a squeeze of fresh orange, lemon or grapefruit!

Tips and Tricks

  • To ensure you’re getting the most out of your limes use a citrus squeezer or if your lime feels hard, microwave it for 15 seconds. Then roll it on the counter under pressure from the heel of your hand for a few seconds before trying to juice it.
  • You can salt the rim if you love pairing salt with tequila.
  • I prefer to use cans of club soda as the bubbles stay fresh and you can chill them as you need them instead of using a larger bottle that can go flat pretty quickly.
  • Add a few dashes of celery or other flavored bitters to add a savory note! You’ll love it!
  • You can swap out the club soda for Topo Chico and turn this into a popular version of Ranch Water.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is tequila good with soda?

YES! I really love the flavor of tequila. The club soda in this recipe pairs so well with it and lets the flavor come through while toning any harsh notes out at the same time. While tequila also goes well with cola and other types of soda, my preference is club soda (which doesn’t add sweetness).
